Workers’ compensation ensures that injured workers have access to medical care. It also covers wage replacement, depending on the amount of time an injured employee is unable to return to work. Successful workers’ compensation programs are partnerships designed to keep employees safe and free from accidents and injury through risk management. In the event an injury or accident does occur, they also provide treatment so injured employees are able to return to work at or as close to their pre-injury conditions as possible.

Award Winner-Leland Blackwood, City of Maryville

The City of Maryville provides water, sewer, electric, codes, planning, economic development, fire, police, parks and recreation, and sanitation services to approximately 30,000 citizens. In his role as risk manager for the city, Leland Blackwood has worked diligently for more than 19 years to make safety a priority across the city and among the entity’s more than 300 employees, and to safeguard public resources, including buildings valued at nearly $220 million.

Award Winner-Louise Horton, City of Bartlett

The City of Bartlett in Shelby County has a population of approximately 60,000 citizens. The city provides EMS, fire, parks and recreation, water and sewer services, and also administers the Bartlett Performing Arts & Conference Center, Bartlett Senior Center, community and rec centers, and municipal school district. Bartlett is branded as a “Great place to live, work, raise a family and retire,” and was named one of Tennessee’s safest cities in 2016 and 2018.

TACP Launches Handle With Care Initiative

A recent national survey revealed that 60% of American children have been exposed to violence, crime or abuse, and 40% have been direct victims of two or more violent acts. Because prolonged exposure to violence can seriously undermine a child’s learning ability, the Tennessee Association of Chiefs of Police (TACP) has launched the Tennessee Handle with Care (HWC) initiative.
